Chandeliers were originally candle holders, hence the name. Today's chandeliers consist of a body with multiple branches, or arms, each of which holds a socket and lamp. A chandelier may have a single tier of arms or several tiers. The body or frame of the chandelier may be constructed of wood, glass, crystal, ceramic or metal. The wiring travel through the body and in, or on, the arms.

The lamps are typically decorative types with candelabra bases and may be enclosed in a glass chimney, globe, or other decorative diffuser, or by miniature shades.
